How to dress

A Guide on Being Prepared

Clothing for All Four Seasons

To keep children comfortable, safe, and ready to explore, proper clothing is essential. Our winters are mild (typically around 50°F), but children still need layers to stay warm while they learn outdoors.

❄️ Winter (45–55°F) — Mild Georgia Winter

Even mild winters feel cooler when children are outdoors for hours. Layers help keep the body warm while allowing movement.

Recommended Clothing:

  • Base layer (leggings + long-sleeve)
  • Warm fleece or wool sweater
  • Insulated jacket
  • Waterproof pants (for wet ground)
  • Warm hat
  • Gloves or mittens
  • Wool or thermal socks
  • Waterproof boots

Notes: Wool is ideal — it keeps children warm even when damp.

🌷 Spring (50–75°F)

Weather: Cool mornings, warm afternoons, occasional rain.
Recommended Clothing:

  • Light layers (long-sleeve shirt + fleece or sweater)
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Waterproof rain pants
  • Closed-toe outdoor shoes or rain boots
  • Extra socks
  • Sunhat

Notes: Spring is unpredictable — layers matter!

☀️ Summer (75–95°F)

Weather: Hot, humid, lots of sun.
Recommended Clothing:

  • Lightweight, breathable shirts
  • Quick-dry shorts
  • Sunhat (wide brim preferred)
  • Water shoes or sturdy sandals
  • Sunscreen applied before school
  • Light rash guard / UV shirt for creek days

Notes: Hydration is emphasized. Shade and water play help keep children cool.

We avoid mosquito bites with natural bug sprays and lanterns.

🍁 Autumn (55–75°F)

Weather: Crisp mornings, warmer afternoons, falling leaves.
Recommended Clothing:

  • Long sleeves + light sweater or fleece
  • Sturdy pants or leggings
  • Waterproof layer for messy play
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Hat or beanie on cooler days

Notes: A perfect layering season.

Tips for Parents:

  • Send a spare outfit (or two). Outdoor play involves water, mud, and creativity.
  • Avoid cotton in winter. It absorbs moisture and cools children down.
  • Label everything. Forest school magic has a way of hiding things in leaves.
  • Comfort > fashion. Children need to move, climb, and get messy.
